The research history of Milk Fat Globule Membrane (MFGM) began in the 1950s with methods to purify its proteins. Analytical advances in the 1970s identified sphingomyelin (SM) and other phospholipids as major components. In the 1980s, studies explored MFGM composition with growing interest in their potential role in brain development, immune health, and gut function. Not until around 2010, did the advancements in dairy processing allow the incorporation of MFGM components into infant formulas.
