This educational activity is a recording of a live presentation by Amy Hair, MD, from the 49th annual Miami Neonatology International Conference in 2025. The presentation examines how immaturity of the liver, gut, pancreas, and microbiome contributes to impaired fatty acid absorption in preterm infants and how milk source, fortification, and targeted dietary intervention with human milk cream can influence preterm infant metabolism and microbial pathways.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the role of the liver-gut-microbiome axis in fatty acid digestion and absorption in preterm infants
  • Identify physiologic factors contributing to impaired fat absorption in preterm infants
  • Evaluate emerging evidence linking microbiome composition and metabolic function with growth outcomes in preterm infants
